The revolution started with cars — millions of them. EU and US regulations required the automotive industry to lower the global warming potential (GWP) of the air conditioning refrigerant in new vehicles, with the goal of dramatically reducing the environmental cost of the leaks that can occur when air conditioning systems are damaged or serviced.
With the creation of Opteon™ YF, Chemours delivered breakthrough hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) chemistry that reduced GWP environmental impact more than 99% compared with previous-generation hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants. It was a major leap forward in sustainable cooling technology — and it was just the beginning.
Chemours continues to extend this transformative cooling technology even further — to coolers in supermarkets and stores, refrigerated trucks, air conditioning systems, heat pumps, chillers, and industrial applications. Demand is being driven by new regulations in the United States, Europe, Japan, and other countries where stricter environmental standards, such as Europe’s F-gas regulations and the EPA’s SNAP delisting program, are phasing out older, less sustainable refrigerants. Eventually, the scale of this upcoming transformation will be even larger than the changeover in the automotive industry.
To meet this growing need, Chemours has added four products to the Opteon™ family in the past year: Opteon™ XP10, XP40, XP44, and the just-announced XL55. Together, they extend the environmental advantages and trusted performance of Opteon™ to an enormous variety of new applications and industries without requiring expensive retrofitting. All of them share the advantages of HFO-based refrigerants: low toxicity, nonflammability or mild flammability, and zero ozone-depletion potential.

New formulas for efficiency.
Why are there different formulations of Opteon™ HFO refrigerant products? Each one is designed for a different use — a supermarket display case has different requirements than a high-temperature heat pump or a refrigerated truck.
Chemours worked closely with our customers to design new Opteon™ formulas that fit the needs of both new and existing cooling systems. This means that the costly, complex systems already installed in trucks, buildings, and supermarkets require little or no retrofitting to upgrade to Opteon™ HFO refrigerant products. It’s why Opteon™ has been embraced as “near drop-in ready” by so many equipment manufacturers, suppliers, and contractors in the industry. This confidence in the products’ reliability and performance is a key reason that Opteon™ is the market leader in sustainable refrigerants.
The laws of increasing demand.
Demand for sustainable HFO refrigerant products has been accelerating as governments around the world strive to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In the US, the EPA is phasing out R-22 and HFC refrigerants in new equipment, and limiting the supply of R-22 for service use as the US moves toward eliminating it by 2020. Canada, Japan, and other countries are also enacting similar regulations. Chemours is helping customers meet these environmental and regulatory challenges with the Opteon™ family of low GWP products.
New regulations also came into force across the EU on January 1, 2015, signaling a phasedown of F-gas refrigerants in new equipment and service limits on existing equipment. With each passing year, the economic and environmental advantages of upgrading to more sustainable alternatives instead of continuing with older refrigerants will be more and more compelling for businesses around the world.
The biggest winner through these changes will be the global environment. The GWP of these modern refrigerants will be more than 50% lower than today — and governments are pushing hard to bring them into widespread adoption by 2020. “By 2025, our next generation of refrigerants is poised to reduce greenhouse gas content by 245 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent worldwide,” said Paul Kirsch, President of Chemours Fluoroproducts.”
